The Nigerian Navy warship, NNS Aradu, yesterday left the Nigerian Navy Dock Yard, Lagos, as it commenced its journey to Portsmouth, United Kingdom, where it would participate in the international fleet review in October.

The Nigerian frigate, regarded as the pride of the nation, is expected to join about 58 other warships from 36 countries in the yearly event, organised in memory of Admiral Lord Nelson, who died in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Four African countries, which includes Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco and South Africa are expected at the event, while Russia, Turkey France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Belgiu-m and Greece will lead other countries from Europe and Asia.

Although, the number of the crew that were on board NNS Aradu when it finally left the shores of the country could not be ascertained, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Sameul Afolayan, told THISDAY, that it was deliberatly left out for security reasons.

According to him, Aradu left the shores of the country and is expected to arrive the UK in about three weeks, and the departure of the frigate has proved sceptics wrong.

''My greatest joy is that the Nigerian flag would be flown along with other countries of the world in the international event. Some critics once said it was not going to be possible," he said.

Afolayan however, charged the crew on board Aradu to be worthy ambassadors of Nigeria in all their dealings with other naval personnel from other countries at the event.

''Your professional capability will also be put to test, as you make a round sailing trip of over 16,000nm to the U.K and back home, in addition to making several port calls.

“Therefore, you must exhibit high level of professional skill in executing your duties. Every aspect of your profession and social life would be monitored by the whole world, because of the uniqueness of the occasion,'' he said.

Afolayan said their welfare has been well catered for through timely release of funds for their requirement by the presidency.

In his address, Flag Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Akindele Timson, said the presence of Aradu at the event would be unique, in that it would be the only ship that would have black naval officers as its entire crew.
